The Japanese recently launched their new geostationary weather satellite, Himawari-8. Compared to the current satellite, MTSAT-2, the Himawari-8 has twice the channels, twice the resolution and the repeat time has gone from hourly to every ten minutes.
Opportunities of this new technology for emergency managers are far greater than the simple mathematics suggest and are beyond what Australian emergency managers are accustomed to. New classes of decision support may soon become readily available, and our industry needs to prepare for this. It must be realised that if the end-users do not know what to ask for, the providers of this technology will not be meeting the full potential.
During this workshop delegates will be exposed to the potential new capabilities that will emerge from the commissioning of Himawari-8 and the impacts this has for industry.
