Historically, the only selection criteria applied to the recruitment of volunteers into the Queensland State Emergency Service (QSES) has been a criminal record check signed off by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and a medical declaration signed by the individual volunteer. The objective of this paper was to explore the effects of introducing some form of physical and psychological selection testing process prior to recruiting volunteers for the QSES. The research for the paper utilised an online survey sent to all QSES volunteers. Whilst the sample was very small the results were still quite surprising in that analysis of the results showed support from the participants for some form of selection process (physical and psychological) as well as an ongoing physical fitness test. The author will discuss the main finding and potential effects on volunteering in Queensland.
