Populations across the developed and emerging world face the challenge of managing growing risk from climate driven and wider natural hazards while maintaining economic growth and development. With her unique physical and human geography, Australia has the privilege and burden of being amongst the pioneers in this journey: where she leads many of us will follow. To address this challenge requires a new relationship between science, capital and public policy to ensure that we understand, integrate and manage risk through the very core of our corporate, civic and personal actions and investments. We are witnessing new alignments between finance, science and regulation to make this practical and tractable. This is happening across the world but, with its institutions and capabilities, Australia has the opportunity and the necessity to create the new rules of the game. In future, we may all be playing by Aussie rules.
